Strong Roots, New Adventures

Dr. Deb Zupito

As another preschool year comes to a close, our hearts are full. There is something incredibly special about being a preschool educator. We are given a front row seat to some of the most important years of a child's life. We watch children arrive with wide eyes and nervous smiles, and over the course of a year, we witness remarkable growth. We see confidence emerge, friendships form, language blossom, and independence take root. We celebrate first successes, comfort through challenges, and cheer for every milestone along the way.

While families experience this growth at home, we have the unique privilege of watching it unfold day by day. We see the child who was once hesitant to join a group become a leader among friends. We watch children discover their voices, solve problems, express their feelings, and develop a sense of who they are. These transformations may happen gradually, but when we pause to reflect at the end of the year, they are nothing short of extraordinary.

The truth is, preschool educators become attached. How could we not?

We spend our days learning what makes each child unique. We know who loves dinosaurs and who loves to dress up. We know who needs an extra hug at drop off and who is eager to tell us every detail about their weekend. We celebrate their accomplishments as if they were our own because, in many ways, their successes become part of our story too.

One of my favorite Winnie the Pooh quotes says, "If ever there is tomorrow when we're not together, keep me in your heart, and I'll stay there forever."

As I reflect on another school year, I cannot help but think how perfectly those words capture the preschool experience. While our children move on to new classrooms, new teachers, and new adventures, they leave a lasting imprint on our hearts. Their laughter echoes in our memories. Their artwork fills our keepsake boxes. Their stories become part of the history of our school.

The beautiful thing about working with young children is that while we are teaching them, they are teaching us as well. They remind us to slow down and notice the world around us. They find joy in puddles, wonder in bugs, excitement in cardboard boxes, and magic in the simplest moments. They remind us that life is not meant to be rushed and that some of the most meaningful moments are often the smallest ones.

As we celebrate graduations, moving up ceremonies, and the end of another wonderful year, I hope families take a moment to pause and reflect. Notice how much your child has grown. Think about the friendships they have built, the skills they have mastered, and the confidence they have gained. Celebrate not only the milestones but also the everyday moments that helped them get there.

Most importantly, protect childhood.

Protect play.

Protect wonder.

Protect the time to explore, imagine, create, and simply be a child.

Childhood is not a race to the next achievement. It is a journey filled with discovery, connection, and joy. It moves far more quickly than we realize while we are living it.

One day, you will find yourself looking through old photographs, holding onto artwork that once covered your refrigerator, and remembering the little voice that asked endless questions. You will search for the memories and visions of these early years because they pass in the blink of an eye.

The days may sometimes feel long, but childhood is beautifully short.

So read the extra story. Build the fort. Watch the fireflies. Sit on the floor and play. Laugh a little longer. Put down the phone. Be present for the ordinary moments because those ordinary moments eventually become the memories we treasure most.

To our graduates and every child who walked through our doors this year, thank you. Thank you for your laughter, your curiosity, your imagination, and your joy. Thank you for allowing us to be part of your journey and for leaving your fingerprints on our hearts.

We are so proud of all you have accomplished and all that is still to come. Keep growing, keep wondering, keep exploring, and never lose the magic of play.

And wherever your journey takes you next, know that a piece of you will always remain with us. What a gift it has been to watch you grow. It takes a village, we are proud to be a part of yours!
