Summer Fun in the Sun… and the Rain! Making the Most of Every Summer Day with Your Little Ones

 Dr. Deb Zupito

The sunshine brings endless opportunities for outdoor adventures, but when those summer rain clouds roll in, the fun does not have to stop. In fact, some of the BEST childhood memories are made splashing in puddles or getting cozy inside with playful activities.

Here are some simple, safe, and silly ways to keep your preschoolers entertained, whether the sun is shining or the raindrops are falling:

Sunshine Fun: Classic Summer Joy

  • Water Play Tables or Buckets: Grab some cups, spoons, and little toys. Instant water fun, no fancy equipment needed.

  • Sidewalk Chalk Art: Let them doodle masterpieces. If rain is on the way, even better…watch the colors swirl in the water!

  • Backyard Obstacle Course: Pool noodles, cones, and even towels can become a mini course for running, hopping, and giggling.

  • Bubble Bonanza: Mix up some bubbles and let them chase, pop, and laugh their way through the yard.

Rainy Day Outdoor Play: Yes, You Can!

  • Puddle Stomping: Dress them in rain boots and let them go wild. It’s messy, magical, and memory-making.

  • Nature Walks in the Rain: Everything looks, sounds, and smells different in the rain. Let them explore with all their senses (just stick to safe paths).

  • Rain Art: Take some washable markers or sidewalk chalk and let them create on the driveway or patio. The rain adds an artistic twist.

  • Catch the Raindrops: Cups, buckets, or even hands outstretched to catch the rain makes for simple, joyful fun.

Reminder: Stay safe! No thunder, lightning, or heavy winds, just gentle, summer rain fun.

Indoor Rainy Day Play: Cozy & Creative

  • Build a Fort: Blankets, chairs, and pillows become a magical hideaway for reading, snacking, or stuffed animal parties.

  • Dance Party: Turn on some favorite tunes and have a rainy-day boogie session.

  • Sensory Bins: Fill a bin with rice, beans, or water beads for scooping and exploring.

  • Rain-Themed Storytime: Cozy up with books about weather, animals, or adventures. Bonus points for a sound effects performance!

  • DIY Craft Station: Paper, crayons, stickers, and glue sticks = endless creativity, rain or shine.

A Little Rain Never Hurt a Childhood.Whether your little one is splashing in puddles or snuggled under a blanket fort, they’re building confidence, creativity, and joyful memories. So, this summer, say yes to the sun, yes to the rain, and yes to the playful magic of childhood!!!
